Bhai Dooj Significance 2023

Another tradition states that on this day, Yama, the deity of death, paid a visit to his sister Yami, also known as Yamuna. She gave him a warm greeting, put on a tilak, and presented him with delectable food. As a result of her affection, Yama was brought to tears and said that everybody who received a tilak from their sister on this day would be granted a long life.

Every year on the second day of the Diwali celebration falls Bhai Dooj, also known as Yama Dwitiya. It celebrates the unique relationship between brothers and sisters and stands for both love and safety. While brothers give presents and swear to protect their sisters, sisters pray for their brothers’ well-being and place a tikka (vermilion mark) on their foreheads.

Yama Dwitiya Puja 2023

Bhai Dooj is also known as Yama Dwitiya as it is connected to Lord Yama, the God of Death, and his sister Yamuna. Additionally, this legend, which is told on Bhai Dooj, highlights the sibling bond. The story goes that the Sun God Surya Dev had two children with Sangya (also called Saranyu or Saranya): a daughter called Yamuna and a boy named Yama.

However, Saranya was unable to endure Surya’s heat, so she gave birth to Chhaya, a woman who looked just like her. She then left her kids with Chhaya and vanished from sight so this festival is also known as Yama Dwitiya and people perform special puja on this day.

Bhai Dooj Rituals 2023

The kids had a deep affection for one another. Yamuna would frequently go to her brother’s house and extend an invitation to her own. However, the God of Death would never be able to fulfill his vow since he would constantly be under time pressure. He made up his mind one day to surprise his sister.

He came to her residence, and Yamuna was ecstatic to see him. She showered him with Akshat and placed a tilak on his forehead to greet him. Siblings follow this ritual on this day and took excellent care of him and cooked a variety of meals.
